Christmas Tree Decorations

Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas

Christmas tree decorating can be done with a variety of different materials and different themes. One of the most important parts of Christmas Decorating in the commercial decorating business is to come up with a great theme. Some of the common themes we do revolve around: different footballs teams’ logos and their colors, the White Christmas theme, the Gingerbread House theme, Children’s Toy theme (great at hospitals) and The Coastal Collection theme (popular concept in coastal areas of South Carolina). It’s common for our themes to have: company logo colors, a local football color, stuffed animals/toys, and the traditional themes of gold, red, blue, and silver balls—tops the lists.

Christmas Decorating Themes

I think that one of the first things to do is to sit down and decide on your theme and how the tree will be used. Is your tree going to be a company tree, venue tree, a personal tree, etc. What kind of tree are we going to be decorating? Then we can look at types of decorations for the tree. If it’s a personal live tree you might want to go with pictures of the kids when they were younger or decorations that they made over the years. When we think of trees we always think of the traditional live trees. What we find is that the live big trees just don’t have the tensile strength in their branches to support the heavier Christmas ornaments or lights. We end up zip typing our ornaments to the tree branches.

Christmas Trees for Residential and Commercial

Then there are the new, artificial, high quality trees which we love. These often come with LED or RGB lights already placed uniformly on them. This helps make the decorating easier. These often go up to about 15 feet and they are interchangeable where taking off a section makes it shorter or adding sections makes the tree taller. We also have live Panel trees (a frame with greenery placed on it which is added to a live tree to make it look larger). These Panel trees can go up to 250 feet. When we are doing a job with a live Christmas tree it takes more structures to hold it, but the Panel trees have pre-lit lights and hold more weight. We first learned about Panel trees in California. We watched as they decorated a 50 foot Nokia tree. It required an Arial lift, a boom truck and they even had men that were harnessed with safety straps and roping- to set it up. It was pretty amazing to see them in action. They use 4 foot panels which are added at the bottom of the tree and each year they try to add another 4 ft panel to the bottom for a bigger and bigger tree.

Picking the Right Location for the Christmas Tree

Once we have selected a theme and a tree we must now pick out the spot for the tree to go. This will vary depending on the commercial or residential site. It will need to be an area with maximum exposure. If it’s a commercial client we need to be sure we have electricity to plug into. One thing we have learned over the years is that we are able to drop power from the roof. In almost any commercial venue we are able to center trees in the room by dropping power from the roof and this prevents people from tripping over the cords on the floor. Once we have a theme, a tree and the spot to place the tree we are ready to put it all together and begin decorating.

Best Method for Applying Christmas Tree Decorations

I like to divide my decorations up into different categories. Examples: red, silver, blue and bows as a sample of what might go onto a commercial Christmas tree. I would first start with the red balls and work that color thru the tree uniformly. We start with our biggest ornaments and work our way down. If the bows are bigger than the balls, we start placing them on the tree first.

Christmas Tree Ornaments

In Christmas Décor we can purchase some really large ornaments. We make sure the size is in scale with the tree. If it’s a 50’ tree, then we use large 3’ ornaments on it. If it’s a 6’ tree, then the 3 to 4 inch ornaments are fine. Applying the decorations in a uniform manner is so important. We also design the base of the tree whether it is in placing large wrapped gifts as a barrier or using an actual white fence with fake snow.

Christmas Tree Toppers

The last part of the decorating is reserved for the tree topper. Picking the appropriate size and theme is not to be under estimated. The topper is often a focal point where the eye is drawn and a well suited tree topper will pull the whole effect together.
